The 2004 Volkswagen MkIV R32 is legendary. It's not just legendary within the VW community, but also among car enthusiasts worldwide. With its rowdy 3.2 liter VR6 engine, stout 6-speed transmission, and of course, the Haldex 4-Motion system ensuring all that power gets to the ground, there's no wondering why so many people dream of owning one.

But what if it were faster? Not just faster...but a LOT FASTER? And, what if it handled and stopped better, too?

At Rocky Mountain Performance & Design, we're going to be finding out how much better we can improve upon this legendary platform.

We purchased this 2004 VW MkIV with a little over 120,000 miles. It had just been painted Inari Silver after recovering from a light rocker impact. The previous owner paints cars for a living, and he is a huge fan of the earlier Rabbits, so he painted it in the color you see in these early photos.

But, despite it being nicely repainted, we're about to go and change that, too.

(More on that in a moment..)

Watch us go through everything on this car to fully transform it into a powerful supercar slayer!

For starters, we're going to turbocharge the engine. Not just with any turbo kit, though. We're installing the HPA Motorsports 'top-of-the-line' FTX700 turbo kit, complete with a Borg Warner EFR 8474 single scroll turbocharger, a liquid cooled short runner intake manifold with aftercooler package for AWIC. To accomplish this level of power, the 3.2 will be bored out .50mm, and will feature fully built internals with Mahle Power Pak Plus 84.5mm pistons which drop things down to a 9:1 compression ratio, HPA only specific IE Tuscan rods, Ferrea valvetrain with welded lifter shims, and HPA custom ground Tri-Flow cams. To get this power to the ground, we have a new Audi MQ500 TTRS/RS3 6-speed transmission that is strengthened and also has the longer European gearset installed. To get all this power to stop, we're upgrading the brakes to 370mm rotors and six-piston HPA custom calipers in the front, and 335mm rotors with four-piston calipers in the rear. In addition to this, as mentioned earlier, we're doing a full color change from the Inari Silver (pretty... but boring) to Phantom Red with the engine bay painted in a creamy off-white.
